PM&R Physicians, also called Physiatrists, are physicians of function. They work to restore or maximize the functional skills, self sufficiency, and mobility of people who have temporary or permanent physical disabilities resulting from injury or illness. They focus on helping people resume the life activities they performed prior to their illness or injury. These disabilities may result from relatively minor sports injuries to permanent disabilities, from recovery after a stroke, to diagnosis and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Their patients come from all age groups, and PM&R physicians treat problems that affect all major organ systems in your body, such as back pain, spinal cord injury, concussions and traumatic brain injury, stroke, and multiple sclerosis. For complex and chronic conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, or cerebral palsy, PM&R physicians frequently act as a team leader, coordinating care with other medical specialists and health professionals.
The PM&R approach to patient care is unique, in that it emphasizes comprehensive, or “whole care” treatment. In other words, Physiatrists take the whole patient into account, not just a specific symptom. This approach provides patients an individualized plan of treatment, prevention of future problems, and goal directed care with steps in place to measure and assess their progress. Their nonsurgical approach to treatment favors less extreme interventions to maximize your function first, before resorting to surgical intervention.
